Managing Corporate Burnout

It pays to recognise corporate burnout both in yourself, and in your colleagues, and burnout often presents itself in one of several different ways.

Excessive fatigue
Employees who are suffering from corporate burnout will often display signs of excessive fatigue. This could be turning up to work late, acting lethargic or drained, or even more subtle signs such as drinking more coffee than usual, yawning, or even just looking over tired.
Corporate burnout causes employees to feel exhausted, both mentally and physically and are all signs that the candle is being burned from both ends a little too often.
Irritability and low moods
Mood swings including short tempers, irritability and fragile emotions are also a common sign of corporate burnout.
If notice your employee's moods have been a bit off recently – perhaps more emotional, or quick to anger – then they may be suffering from corporate burnout.
Of course, we all suffer from bad moods occasionally, but if this is coupled with any other signs of corporate burnout, or has been going on for a long period of time, it might be worth considering whether employees are feeling overworked or bogged down with their workload currently.

If you notice a previously engaged and enthusiastic employee is now seeming disinterested or disheartened around the office, it may be due to corporate burnout.
When we are feeling overwhelmed or overloaded at work, it can sometimes become too much and cause us to feel disconnected and almost numb to our surroundings.

Employees displaying signs of disconnection may be suffering from stress and anxiety caused by work, something that can cause many physical and psychological issues if not addressed.

Perhaps one of the most subtle, but no less important, signs of corporate burnout, disconnection and disinterest in work is one of the key indications to look out for when it comes to managing job burnout as an employer.

How to manage corporate burnout in your employees

Once you can identify corporate burnout in employees, the next step is knowing how to manage it effectively.

Managing corporate burnout needs to be done delicately and sensitively, as it is an issue that can influence and take a toll on a person's mental wellbeing.

1. Approach employees and give them the opportunity to discuss any issues they may be having. You must remember that some people are more open than others, and it isn't always easy to admit when it is necessary to take a step back at work, even for our own good.

Of course, acknowledging a problem has an incredible amount of power, and giving employees the chance to say out loud that they are struggling at work and aren't coping, can be extremely effective at relieving the pressure of corporate burnout.

Ensuring you have an open-door policy in your workplace can also encourage staff members to come to you if they are feeling overworked or overwhelmed. Promoting this amongst your team may also prevent corporate burnout and gives you the opportunity to make changes to workloads before staff members feel burnt out.


2. Ask your employees what they need to ease the pressures they have been having at work that have led to corporate burnout.

This might mean assessing job roles, or delegating tasks evenly throughout the team to assist with the workloads. As an employer it is your job to ensure that your staff have a manageable workload, and that people don't take on too much at one time.

It might be that you need to rethink the structure of your whole team and ensure that corporate burnout doesn't become an issue for anybody else in the office.


3. Managing corporate burnout can be curbed by establishing clear career paths for your employees, so take the time to discuss the aspirations of your team and assign milestones for them to work towards.

Setting clear goals alongside new responsibilities prevents employees taking on too many things at once to try and push their career forward. Ambitious employees may be under the impression that the more work and assignments they take on, the better chance they have at making their way up the ladder.

Unfortunately, this can lead to corporate burnout and quickly leave employees feeling overwhelmed. By putting in place a performance management process, you are encouraging and supporting employees in moving forward within your company, whilst managing and minimising the chance of corporate burnout.


4. Consider putting in place a mentoring system for employees to ensure that everyone in the workplace has support and assistance in their roles. This can be extremely effective for managing corporate burnout, as it encourages team members to communicate more when it comes to their jobs and promotes a happier and more enjoyable workplace.

Loneliness is quite common in the workplace, particularly in office environments, and this can be a factor in causing corporate burnout when team members feel they cannot rely on their peers to assist with heavy workloads and ease stress.

Mentoring systems break down those barriers and enables you to manage and prevent corporate burnout even on those days where you may be absent from the office.

Employees that feel supported and rewarded in their work are more likely to want to succeed and care about their jobs. Therefore, mentoring schemes will not only benefit your employees as individuals but will create a more productive and prosperous team for your business.


5. Offer employees the chance to take a couple of days holiday. Prioritising self-care is one of the best ways to tackle corporate burnout, so ensure that they take some personal time to get back to themselves and relax.

Organising one afternoon per week where your employees can have lunch together or having an early finish on a Friday could introduce a better balance in the workplace, and prevent a negative work-life balance – a huge cause of corporate burnout.


6. Curb corporate burnout by creating a positive and enjoyable workplace environment. You can do this by promoting a sense of community throughout the office, and through using employee benefit schemes.


Schemes such as flexible working hours, team-building events such as escape rooms, or paint balling, and Friday drinks are all a fantastic way to promote a healthy work-life balance, and also gives your employees a sense of trust and freedom within their work.

Corporate burnout is the cause of overworking and stress, and by making your workplace a more positive and enjoyable place to be, the factors that can cause burnout in your employees, are minimised.
